Honda Sets up a Second US Plant for Acura Mdx Production

Honda has announced the addition of a second US production location dedicated towards Acura MDX luxury SUV.

Starting from 2017, Honda is expected to add production of Acura MDX at its East Liberty, Ohio plant, where the company invested $85m for the introduction of equipment required to support production of the vehicle.

However, the production of the MDX will also continue at its Lincoln, Alabama plant which is presently responsible for the production of MDX and its V-6 engine.

The company took the step to cope up with the demand for Honda and Acura light trucks in North America.

The company recorded 25.2% increase of Honda and Acura vehicle sales in the US during the month of January which is a new record for the company.

Five vehicles including Acura RDX sport-utility vehicle, Honda Crosstour, and Honda CR-V are currently being produced at the The East Liberty Plant. The Lincoln, Alabama plant is the exclusive producer of Acura MDX, Honda Pilot SUV and Honda Odyssey.

American Honda Motor executive vice president John Mendel said: "This initiative will give us greater flexibility to meet growing customer demand for our Honda and Acura light truck models.

"Increasing our flexibility and fully utilizing available production resources is critical to our future growth, which will be driven heavily by our light truck business and new models like the Honda HR-V crossover and redesigned Pilot SUV."
