Archer Daniels Acquires Specialty Pasta Maker Caterina Foods

Global food processing company Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) has acquired the assets of Illinois based Caterina Foods for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Lake Bluff in the US state of Illinois, Caterina Foods is a toll manufacturer of specialty gluten-free and high-protein pastas.

ADM WILD Flavors and Specialty Ingredients president Vince Macciocchi said: “ADM is continuing to deliver on our strategy to create shareholder value by expanding our capabilities downstream in the value chain.”

Caterina Foods is also a toll processor for Harvest Innovations, a producer of soy proteins, oils and gluten-free ingredients in which ADM had bought a majority stake in February this year.

According to Macciocchi, the acquisition of Caterina assets helps ADM in expanding its production of specialty pastas from legumes and grains other than wheat while catering to the needs of health-conscious consumers.

Macciocchi added that both Harvest and Caterina would help in streamlining ADM’s operations while expanding it capabilities in the growing gluten-free and non-wheat pastas space.

With about 60 employees, Caterina makes gluten-free and high-protein pastas into different shapes and sizes using flours prepared from corn, rice, peas, quinoa, lentils along with other grains and legumes.

Last week, ADM announced that its WILD Flavors & Specialty Ingredients unit would present a range of ingredients and concepts for new natural products at SIAL food innovation exhibition to be held in Paris this month.
