PSA Expands Cooperation with General Motors

Car manufacturers Peugeot and General Motors planned to expand their cooperation, and researched three vehicle platforms together.

Last Thursday (Jan.24), these two companies announced the decision above in the joint news conference in Brussels. According to the plan, besides the three vehicle platforms, these two companies will develop the fourth platform together to produce fuel-efficient small cars. In addition, Peugeot and GM considered combining their forces in South America and Russia.

By the cooperation, these two companies hope to save about 2 billion dollars (Euro 1.5 billion) every year in the next five years. The first batch of cars they produce together will be sold in the market by the end of 2016.

Last Thursday (Jan.24), when announced the plan in Brussels, Peugeot’s CEO Philippe Varin and GM’s vice president Stephen Girsky said, the newly developed models will replace Opel (Corsa, Zafira and Meriva) and Peugeot (C3, 3008 and 2008). They also developed an upgrade platform together to produce small cars with low CO2 emissions, which will become the foundation of these two brands’ next-gene cars.

A spokesman said Peugeot cars produced by GM’s subsidiary Opel factory in German or Opel cars produced in France were not a part of the alliance. It is said that Opel and Peugeot are active in European market, which are influenced by the local sales crisis at present.
