Giant Food of Landover, Maryland, and Stop & Shop are recalling the Ultimate Meatless Burger in the US, due to possible contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. This alert has been issued following a recall by supplier Veggie Patch.
The products being recalled by the retail stores are: 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, Veggie Patch The Ultimate Meatless Burger with a Use-By date Jan/12/2013 and UPC code 6-10129-00211-5.
Consumption of products containing Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
On November 30, Veggie Patch, a producer of vegetable and meatless products, issued a voluntary recall of the Ultimate Meatless Burger and Falafel in the US as the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The potentially affected Ultimate Meatless Burger was available for sale as of 21 November, 2012 in the following states: New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Indiana, Wisconsin, Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.
The potentially affected Falafel was available for sale as of 21 November 2012, nationwide. The Falafel affected by the recall is 9-ounce trays of refrigerated, fully cooked, Veggie Patch, Falafel with a Use-By date, Jan/15/2013; UPC code 6-10129-06619-3 (which can be found on back of package)
No illnesses have been reported to date. Veggie Patch noted that it identified this problem as part of its routine testing of its products.
Consumers who purchased any product with the specific use-by dates and UPC codes listed above have been advised to dispose of the product. No other Veggie Patch products or other use-by dates of The Ultimate Meatless Burger or Falafel are affected by this recall.
