HATCI Has Cooperated with University of Michigan to Develop Two New Automotive Technology

Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center (HATCI) has collaborated with the University of Michigan for the development of two new distracted driving and fuel economy automotive engineering projects.

Under the deal, the University of Michigan will act as a logical partner for HATCI and will offer scholastic talent in the form of graduate students and professors for the projects.

The new projects will combine the graduate students and professors from the University's College of Engineering and School of Kinesiology with HATCI vehicle engineers to jointly produce the systems to meet the ever-changing customer needs and technology challenges.

HATCI president Sung Hwan Cho said by combining the graduate students with engineers from the company, the company can explore new ways to approach technological hurdles in the automotive industry.

"While we've had many collaborative efforts in the past, this partnership marks the beginning of a much longer-term and more focused relationship that will continue to grow in the coming years," Cho said.

U-M Business Engagement Center senior director Umesh Patel said the new research collaborations with the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center demonstrate the multi-disciplinary nature of automotive research and have the potential to catalyze further research at the University of Michigan as well as to inform our educational mission.

"We look forward to the opportunity to strengthen and expand our partnership," Patel added.
