Irish paper and packaging group Smurfit Kappa has won the PPI award for the Eco Tray, a corrugated tray offering a green alternative to conventional polystyrene and plastic trays.
According to the company, the 100% recyclable Eco Tray optimizes storage space and cuts down CO2 emissions. It is also suitable for flexographic print and pre-print and can be customized to fit the customer's needs.
The thermoformed corrugated board solution has been developed by the company for current market as well as other sectors, unlike the traditional polystyrene trays, which were offered earlier for consumer packaging in the fruit and vegetable market.
Smurfit Kappa Group CEO Gary Gann said the award shows the company's on-going mission to provide its customers with sustainable packaging.
"The Eco Tray is an excellent example of how the expertise and experience of our employees at Smurfit Kappa can result in innovative packaging solutions which have clear benefits for the environment," Gann said.
