Japanese automotive company Nissan Motor and Tan Chong Group have received an approval of a license from the Myanmar Investment Commission to manufacture and distribute Nissan vehicles in Myanmar.
This approval allows Tan Chong Motor Myanmar to assemble and distribute Nissan vehicles locally.
Tan Chong will start a three-year project to build a local manufacturing facility in Bago, Myanmar.
To be established in 324,000m2 industrial complex, the new automobile manufacturing site will be the largest in the country and will be constructed and operated by Tan Chong Motor Myanmar.
With an expected production capacity of over 10,000 units per year, the new facility will have a workforce of 300 initially and will begin the manufacture of Nissan Sunny in 2015.
Nissan Motor president and chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn said that this approval represents a key milestone in the company's global growth plan and is a clear demonstration of their commitment to Mobility for All.
"We are confident that Myanmar will be an important economic engine for the region and are committed to help develop its automotive industry," Ghosn added.
Tan Chong Group executive deputy chairman Dato' Tan Heng Chew said the company is confident that Myanmar will be the next growth driver for the Indo-China region.
"Moreover, the industry leading expertise and experience of both Nissan and the Tan Chong Group in the automotive sector will definitely assist the further growth of this country.Together with Nissan, our extensive experience in the manufacturing and distribution of Nissan vehicles will contribute towards the expansion of the Nissan brand in Myanmar," Heng Chew added.
Tan Chong Group is the sole distributor for NISSAN vehicles in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.
Nissan Motor, a part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, has sold more than 4.9 million vehicles in fiscal 2012. It has more than 60 models under its Nissan and Infiniti brands.
