Mercedes-Benz Econic Models with Euro VI Engines Have Been Delivered to Hamburg

The first Mercedes-Benz Econic models with Euro VI engines have been delivered to Hamburg. That is where Hamburg municipal sanitation (SRH) has now taken delivery of two 2630 L model vehicles, fitted with Rotopress model refuse collection bodies from Faun Umwelttechnik.

Engines which meet the European Euro VI emissions standard now make the Econic even cleaner and even more economical. For compared with the predecessor models the output of particulate matter fell by 50 percent and that of nitrogen oxides by 90 percent. At the same time it was possible to reduce the fuel consumption by up to four percent. "The new Econic is one of the most environmentally compatible models in its category. We are delighted to be able to play our part in sustainable mobility in Hamburg with the new special purpose vehicles", said Bernd Zierold, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Hamburg company-owned sales and service outlet. This fits well with the SRH strategy, as emphasised by its Director, Professor Dr Rüdiger Siechau: "As our understanding of sustainability encompasses long-term planning and anticipatory action."

The exterior distinguishing feature of the Econic is the spacious, generously glazed cab with a low entrance. It makes it easier for the team to climb in and out frequently on their daily disposal round and creates optimum ergonomic working conditions. What's more, the cab offers maximum possible safety thanks to its all-round glazing and it makes it possible for the driver to communicate with passers-by at eye level. Apart from a new engine with 220 kW (299 hp) and a perm. GVW of nearly 26 t (model 2630) the new Econic models also include ergonomically optimised controls, considerably further enhanced comfort and a more attractive appearance through the revised cab design. Furthermore, through the use of new chassis, familiar from the Actros and Antos models, it has been possible to compensate for the additional weight incurred due to the Euro VI technology. Here is what Michael Dietz, Head of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, had to say about this: "We are proud to be able to support our long-standing customer, Hamburg municipal sanitation, with the new-generation Econic, too, in fulfilling its challenging tasks."

Econic customer right from the outset

SRH has been an Econic customer right from the word go and is also one of the biggest in the whole of Europe. SRH currently has more than 220 Econic vehicles in use, taking care of all of the refuse disposal of private households in Hamburg. Every year more than one million tonnes of refuse are conveyed for recycling or environmentally compatible disposal. The SRH is Hamburg's largest and leading service provider in the field of waste management. With some 2500 employees it is a full-service partner offering single-source refuse and recyclable materials disposal plus cleaning services for public, commercial and private customers.

As a local authority disposal management entity and certified expert disposal operation the municipal sanitation collects, transports, stores and treats the refuse from around 890,000 Hamburg households and 100,000 commercial companies, weekly cleans over 3000 km of road surfaces and over 5000 km of pavements and as part of winter maintenance ensures the necessary road safety in an economic metropolis with around 1.7 million inhabitants.
