The state of Ontario, Canada has hiked the incentives for electric vehicles to a maximum of $14,000, making it attractive for car buyers.
As per the new program, the incentive has been increased for electric vehicles from $5000 to $8,000 and $6000 to $10,000.
EV buyers can also avail an additional $3,000 incentive for vehicles with larger battery capacities and get $1,000 incentive for vehicles with five or more seats.
With a new strategy for climate change, Ontario is introducing a new and modernized electric vehicle incentive program that can help reduce green house gas emissions and one that would make transition from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles easier for Ontarians.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne made this announcement at WaterPark in Toronto.
The goal of this incentive program is to help Ontarians take up low or zero-emission vehicles and thereby helping reduce the green house gas emissions by 80% below the levels of 1990s by 2050.
Kathleen Wynne said: "With a growing population and expanding urban regions, transportation emissions pose one of our province's greatest challenges in achieving our ambitious greenhouse gas pollution reduction targets.
"By making it easier for people to switch to an electric vehicle, we are taking an important step in our fight against climate change while ensuring our province remains productive and efficient."
Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca said: "We are working hard to continue our support for green technology because the benefits of doing this are clear.
"Providing better incentives for electric vehicles will help consumers and businesses make the transition to more sustainable vehicles, and keep Ontario at the forefront of the clean, green economy."
The previous and the first electric vehicle incentive program was started back in 2010. With this program, incentives were provided for buying 4,800 electric vehicles and about 1,100 home chargers.
The Canadian province also promised to continue providing incentives linked to battery capacity for more than 5 kilowatt-hours, however the incentives for vehicles priced between $75,000 and $150,000 will be capped at $3,000.
The province will also provide up to $1000 for buying and installing chargers for home and business use.
The new initiative has been taken after the announcement made in December 2015 about an additional $20m of investment going in to the Ontario's Green Investment Fund.
This will help in creating a network of fast-charging public electric vehicle charging stations to support city-to-city and in-city EV travel across the province.
Ontario Green Investment Fund is a $325m down payment to strengthen the economy, create more jobs and reduce green house gas emissions.
