Global automotive supplier Magna International has agreed to supply all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the new Mercedes-Benz GLA compact SUV as well as the A45 AMG and the CLA vehicles.
The AWD system, which is known as ProActive Rear Drive Module, has been designed as a platform solution for C-segment vehicles and offer integration for an AWD coupling and rear axle drive.
According to the company, the system improves vehicle performance in terms of drag, torque, system efficiency and weight.
Magna Powertrain president Jake Hirsch said as a long-time supplier partner of Mercedes-Benz, the company is pleased to support their entire global platform with ProActive AWD system.
"We are confident that the performance enhancements enabled by this technology will add tremendous value to this vehicle segment," Hirsch added.
AWD system was developed by Magna Powertrain in partnership with Daimler, wherein the rear axle drive and the AWD coupling were developed by Magna Powertrain and the integration into the vehicle was done by Daimler.
The system uses one common oil circuit to improve the coupling function and reduces drag by about 14% with elimination of seal rings and bearings leading in reduced CO2 emissions.
