BMW Has Signed a MoU with Samsung SDI to Extend Its Collaboration Battery Cells

BMW has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung SDI to extend its collaboration battery cells supply for electro-mobility.

Under the deal, Samsung SDI will provide battery cells for the BMW i3, BMW i8 and additional hybrid variants.

The scope of the latest deal includes increase in quantities delivered over the medium-term and further technological development of battery cells.

BMW board member Klaus Draeger said: "Our partnership with Samsung SDI is a good example of successful Korean-German cooperation on innovative technologies.

"The battery is a key component in every electric vehicle - since it basically determines the range and performance capabilities of the car."

Samsung SDI CEO Sang-Jin Park said: "The decision taken in 2009 to choose lithium-ion battery cells from Samsung SDI for the BMW i models was the right one for both companies.

"Additional BMW vehicles will also be equipped with Samsung SDI's leading lithium-ion technology."

BMW produces batteries for the BMW i3, BMW i8 and other future hybrid vehicles at its plant in Dingolfing, Germany.
