Waste management company in the US, Republic Services has announced plans to invest nearly $19m to renovate its North St Louis County (Hazelwood) and South St Louis County (Bella Villa) recycling centers.
As part of the enhancements, Republic Services will add new technology that will make the sorting process efficient, enabling the company to triple its recycling capacity to as much as 30 tons per hour.
Republic Services area president Tim Trost said the improvements to be made to the facilities in St Louis allow the company to meet current demand, and it is adding capacity to accommodate even more recycling in the future.
"We want St. Louis to rethink waste and shift the paradigm to focus first on recycling, and then send the material that remains to the landfill," Trost added.
According to the company, recycling helps conserve landfill space and can have a significant economic impact, enabling to reduce the cost of consumer goods.
Manufacturers use the sorted recyclables from Republic Services in new products and consumer goods such as toilet paper.
With the help of Republic Services' single-stream recycling service, customers can use one bin to consolidate their recyclables including steel, aluminum, plastic and glass containers, as well as cardboard and paper for the company to collect and process at its recycling centers.
