Continental Has Started to Manufacture Anti-Lock Brake Systems in Brazil

Automotive supplier Continental has commenced the manufacturing of the anti-lock brake systems (ABS) at its site in Varzea Paulista near Sao Paulo in Brazil.

The company has invested about EUR10m in the international project to combine its ABS production into the Varzea Paulista plant, which used to produce only hydraulic brake systems.

According to the company, the new ABS production line has a maximum capacity of manufacturing 1.2 million units annually.

Continental Chassis & Safety Division Electronic Brake Systems Business Unit executive vice president Frank Jourdan said the use of ABS systems is on the increase in the fast-growing Brazilian market and it is now being given legal force as the ABS will be mandatory for all new vehicles from 2014.

"By producing these systems in-country, we are matching our portfolio to the requirements of our local customers," Jourdan added.

Continental Electronic Brake Systems Business Unit Brazil head Michael Diehl said: "ABS production will be based on a two-shift system in the first half of 2013; three-shifts will then be worked in the second half of the year."
