The UK government has announced £35m funding to promote ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) and shortlisted 12 UK cities to become the country’s first ‘Go Ultra Low Cities’.
The winners would share the £35m of funding, which is an addition to the £30m announced for the local authorities and bus operators to replace existing vehicles with greener alternatives in order to improve the air quality.
The shortlisted cities include Greater London Authority, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, City of York Council, West of England, North East Combined Authority, and Dundee City Council.
According to the government, the shortlisted cities will be asked to fully develop their proposals over summer, following which 2 to 4 cities will be declared as winners.
UK Transport Minister Baroness Kramer said: "Today's shortlist of 12 Go Ultra Low cities from across the country is an important part of our effort to improve air quality and establish the UK as a global leader in the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles.
"The additional £30M investment in low emission buses is also a fantastic opportunity for local authorities who want innovative, cost efficient public transport in their communities."
The investment is a part of the previously announced £500m package dedicated for ULEVs.
