The Institution Has Announced The Winners of Its 2012 Innovation Awards

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has announced the winners of its 2012 Innovation Awards, with LUX-TSI winning the award in the Measurement in Action category, sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

The IET Innovation Awards recognise the most innovative companies operating within a wide variety of engineering and technology disciplines, and the Measurement in Action award gives businesses the opportunity to demonstrate the positive impact that accurate measurement can have. LUX-TSI won the award for its eyeLIGHT? software platform, which is the first software suite to analyse LED, Lamp and Laser Optical Safety. This could significantly enhance the analysis of novel light sources and help accelerate the adoption of new low-energy forms of lighting, while understanding any potential hazards.

Dr Gareth Jones, CEO of LUX-TSI, said:

"We are delighted with this award which adds credibility to LUX-TSI as a supplier of innovative software solutions for advanced lighting and photonic measurements. The appointment of Dr Neil Haigh as Technical Director of LUX-TSI in June, along with a license agreement from NPL, and the winning of this award has made this a superb start to our position as an innovator in software for measurement solutions."

Dr Neil Haigh, LUX-TSI's chief software architect and developer of the software, said:

"I was delighted to receive this prestigious award on behalf of LUX-TSI, as it reflects the culmination of several years of effort developing a software platform robust enough to handle and analyse any light source for optical radiation safety in accordance with the key international safety standards, regardless of whether the source is a laser, LED or lamp. The award has come at just the right time in readiness for world-wide launch in 2013."

The initial prototype of the software was developed at NPL by Simon Hall, who said: "I am pleased with the recognition of the unique nature of the software and its development by LUX-TSI. The software could significantly enhance the analysis of novel light sources and allow the adoption of new low energy forms of lighting, while understanding any potential hazard."

Also shortlisted for the award were: AnTech Ltd, for their innovative gyro system for directional measurement whilst drilling within oil and gas wells; Link Microtek Ltd, for their checkpoint bottle scanner based on the electromagnetic identification of liquids; NATS, for their air traffic management environmental 3-dimensional Inefficiency score; and Strainsonics Ltd, for their novel ultrasonic load monitoring technology.

The 2012 IET Innovation Awards ceremony was held at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London, on 22 November 2012. The awards attracted entries from 25 countries, offering industry innovators worldwide a unique opportunity to demonstrate their innovation and imagination as they tackle their own local, economic and social challenges.
