Continental has broken ground on $500m expansion of its Sumter facility to double tire production to eight million units by 2021.
The Phase 2 expansion will increase the production from four million units planned for 2016.
Expanded facility will add 720,000 ft2 area to the existing one million square feet and will include new production hall and expanded warehouses.
Continental highlighted that the tires produced at the Sumter plant will help meet the increasing demand for Continental and General brand tires.
The expansion will also create around 1,600 new jobs in the plant, for which the company has already hired around 700 employees and it is expected to hire 800 more by the end of 2015.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said: "Our workforce has proven to Continental, and to the entire world, that when you invest in South Carolina and ask us to make your products, we're going to make them well.
"Continental is a huge reason our state produces more tires than any other state in the country, and we're excited to celebrate a bright future for the partnership between South Carolina and this great company."
The construction of the first Phase started in 2012 and production began in October 2013 and for the development South Carolina vendors provided more than $100m funding.
Kajima Building & Design Group was the general contractor for the plant expansion which took nine months to complete.
