Tesla Motors has unveiled the much-anticipated Model 3 sedan for a starting price of $35,000 and plans to deliver the car to the masses by the end of 2017.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the car can pick up a speed of 0-60MPH in less than 6 seconds and will offer a range of at least 215 miles. For long distance travel it will offer supercharging feature and come with auto-pilot safety feature.
However, the company hopes to increase the specifications by the time it releases the model for sales next year, The Verge reported.
Tesla said that it has already received over 115,000 preorders for the car and expects the number to increase going forward.
The company's high-speed Supercharging network will also be available for all Model 3 cars. It plans to double the number of Superchargers currently available to 7,200 when it launches the Model 3 by the end of next year.
Telsa's current vehicles- the Model S and Model X- are very expensive for the buyers even after deducting tax incentives. Both the cars are priced above $100,000.
With the Model 3 having a starting price of $35,000, the company is estimated to increase its sales significantly. In a bid to boost the sales of its new model, it plans to double the dealership and service network.
The Model 3 car will have both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive similar to that of the Model S vehicle. The model has a seating capacity for five adults and will have front and rear trunks for storage.
"More cargo capacity than any gasoline car of the same external dimensions," Musk said.
It will feature a 15-inch landscape touchscreen inside compared to the 17-inch portrait touchscreen in the Model S and X.
