UK-based designer of protective containers Croft Associates has started production of its new Safstore range of robust shielded packages for the storage, transport and final disposal of Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste (ILW).
Developed in partnership with the nuclear industry, the range includes containers for low specific activity materials such as the 4m, 2m and 2m half-height Safstores and containers for Type B contents.
Ductile cast iron (DCI) foundries has helped Croft to ensure that the Safstore packages meet the demanding levels of quality assurance expected of these types of packages and to deliver a better performance level that will ensure safety during and after extended storage.
The containers can be replaced and retested without presenting the operators with a radiation hazard, even after prolonged storage.
Croft managing director Bob Vaughan said the Safstore range helps to simplify waste packaging operations to assist in hazard reduction.
"This new generation of packages will not only speed up decommissioning, allowing for more rapid progress in hazard reduction, and significantly reduce costs but will also ensure that stringent safety requirements can be adhered to, not just now, but for centuries to come," Vaughan said.
