Ford to Launch Mondeo Energi Plug-in Hybrid in China Next Year

Ford Motor has announced to launch Mondeo Energi vehicle in China next year, as part of its new electrification strategy for the country.

Mondeo Energi will be Ford’s first plug-in hybrid to be manufactured by Changan Ford joint venture. It also plans to introduce a whole range of EVs by 2025.

Mondeo Energi, the plug-in hybrid will have an electric drive range of 50km, with fast torque, smooth acceleration and quiet operation. The vehicle not only reduces emissions, but also increases fuel economy for customers.

One of the benefits of this hybrid vehicle is that it lets users tap into the battery power during shorter trips in town and gas for longer trips. This reduces frequent stops at gas stations for daily commute. The battery supporting Mondeo Energi can either be charged at home or at office.

Besides, the company intends to introduce a new range of electrified SUVs in the country within the next five years.

To cater to the diverse needs of the Chinese market, the company is planning to launch a wide range of vehicles including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully battery-powered electric vehicles by the year 2025.

The fully electric vehicles from Ford for the Chinese market are expected to have a range of about 450km. Besides being sold in China, the SUVs will be made available in North America and Europe.

Ford stated that China is now one of the strong markets for electric vehicles due to the government support and increased customer acceptance.

The company will produce electrified powertrains in China by 2020 and plans to strenghten its capabilities in new energy vehicle engineering at its Nanjing Research and Engineering Centre.

Ford Motor Company president and CEO Mark Fields said “The time is right for Ford to expand our EV lineup and investments in China.

“We are prioritizing our electrification efforts on China to reflect its importance as a global electrified vehicle market and to make lives better, simpler and more cost effective for Chinese consumers.”
