Honda Introduces Powerful Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle

Honda has unveiled Clarity Fuel Cell, a new version of the fuel cell vehicle lineup, at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The car is powered by a Lithium-ion battery, and the fuel cell stack for the model has been downsized by 33% compared to its predecessor.

However, the car is capable of providing output of more than 100kW and output density of 3.1kW/L , which is a 60% improvement over its previous generation model.

Honda has made the fuel cell powertrain as compact as a V6 engine.

The car is expected to give tough competition to Toyota's Mirai that has been rolled out in Californian markets.

Clarity Fuel Cell is roomier than Mirai and has driving range of more than 700km on a single fueling.

The 700km of cruising range has been achieved due to the 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen storage tank.

The scope of the vehicle can be increased when it is combined with an external power feeding device, 'Power Exporter 9000' which will help make the vehicle become a power supplier to provide electricity to the community during disasters.

Power Exporter 9000 will help the vehicle to supply seven-day worth of electricity for an average household.

The company said that the sale of the new five-seater FCV will start in March next year with special focus on local government bodies and business customers, with whom Honda has already been working to boost the usage of FCVs.
