Japanese carmaker Mazda's North American operations division has recalled 109,000 units of Mazda Tribute SUV across the US over a corrosion issue with certain parts.
The recall has been issued for the Tribute vehicles with model year 2001-2004, which were manufactured from 22 May 2000 to 19 December 2003.
According to an NHTSA filing, the vehicles may experience excessive corrosion at the forward attachment of the lower control arm.
The rust would result in separation of the lower control arm leading to loss of steering control as well as increasing the risk of a crash.
Under the recall, Mazda will install a newly designed reinforcement cross-brace. The company is expected to send an interim notification by 19 May 2014.
All the vehicles included in the recall were sold in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
