American vehicle manufacturer General Motors (GM) has issued a voluntary recall of around 57,605 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles in the US.
Of the total vehicles, 42,696 vehicles of certain model year 2014 are being recalled as the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control in these vehicles may intermittently become inoperable when the vehicle is started, preventing the windshield defroster from working.
This effect may decrease the driver's visibility thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
Due to this, the vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems. These vehicles were manufactured from 12 June 2013, through 5 November 2013.
The remaining 14,909 are of certain model year 2013 and will be recalled as the wiring harness for the power seat may contact the seat frame which may chafe the harness.
A short circuit could occur, resulting unintended movement of the seat, if the harness is chaffed enough to expose the wires.
Consequences of the effect will include the seat to become inoperative, sparking under the seat, flickering lights, smoke, or possibly a fire.
These vehicles were manufactured from 25 October 2011 to 29 June 2012 and are equipped with the 8-way power adjustable front seat feature.
These recalls will begin in early December 2013, of which GM will notify owners, and dealers will repair the damage free of charge.
