ChargePoint has launched the first of over the 80 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to be installed around New York in the US.
The charging stations have been installed with a funding of $1m from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), while the first station was installed at The Solaire in Battery Park City.
In early 2013, Governor Cuomo had launched Charge New York program to promote EVs with investment of $50m over five years, which includes installation of 3,000 public and workplace charging stations by 2018, under which the current funding has been made.
NYSERDA president and CEO Francis Murray Jr said: "Given the amount of emissions produced by the transportation sector, this statewide EV infrastructure will allow the state to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions."
ChargePoint president and CEO Pat Romano said, "The majority of residents in New York City live in apartments and without this kind of public infrastructure investment, residents would not be able to buy electric vehicles."
