Lenzing Acquired Tencel in 2004 and Until Recently Has Operated It as a Separate Group

Lenzing AG reports production on a jumbo Tencel® production line under construction at its Lenzing, Austria, headquarters is set to begin in 2014. The 130 million-euro expansion will add 64,000 metric tons of annual production capacity to the current total of 150,000 metric tons of capacity at three existing Tencel plants, and will support growing demand for Tencel in new applications including denim, home textiles, technical textiles, sporting applications and outerwear.

Lenzing acquired Tencel in 2004 and until recently has operated it as a separate group. The Lenzing and Tencel groups now have been merged, and the expertise and technologies of both will be utilized during construction of the state-of-the-art line. Tencel recently celebrated its 20th year of production.

"Tencel represents the greatest technological innovation in the man-made cellulose fiber industry since the invention of the viscose fiber around 100 years ago," said Dieter Eichinger, vice president, Textile Fibers business unit, Lenzing. "The developments of the last 20 years are just the beginning of a success story which will continue for many decades to come. Tencel uniquely answers the demands for competitive products in costs relative to other fibers with the demands for sustainable production. Tencel represents a breakthrough technology and I am proud that the Lenzing group leads the industry with Tencel."
