The company has decided to close the plant following an18-month-long analysis of the region's cattle supply and it has also examined all other possible options.

According to the company, the closure is expected to reduce workforce by 600 jobs.

Cargill Beef president John Keating said, "It is unfortunate that we must close any beef plant because of the impact to good people, their families and the community. The harsh reality is that the U.S. beef cattle herd is at its lowest level since 1951, with any significant herd expansion being years away."

In addition, the company will continue its operations at the ground beef plant at the site in order to meet the consumer demand.

Cargill's six other beef harvest plants in the country will not be effected by the closure.
