GM Renews Agreement with CMU for Automatic Driving Vehicles

American vehicle manufacturer General Motors (GM) has renewed its five-year agreement with its research partner Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh (CMU) for the development of new technologies for production of automatic driving vehicles.

This latest deal builds on GM and CMU's development of an autonomous Chevrolet Tahoe, Boss. This vehicle travelled 60 miles through mixed traffic and intersections in less than six hours.

In 2008, both the partners established GM-CMU Autonomous Driving Collaborative Research Lab to develop automated vehicle technologies, including sensor fusion and system controls.

This lab was established to conduct research on multiple projects that are aligned with GM's next-generation advanced crash-avoidance technologies.

CMU research team has been designing, developing and testing a variety of advanced crash-avoidance technologies on a Cadillac SRX luxury crossover test vehicle from the past two years.

GM researchers conduct technology reviews and provide directional guidance and regular feedback to the CMU team.

GM Electric and Control Systems Research Lab R&D director John Capp said: "The work we're doing with Carnegie Mellon is speeding the development of technologies designed to enhance the driving experience."

Some of the Cadillac's latest models including 2014 Cadillac CTS, XTS and ATS luxury sedans feature full-speed range adaptive cruise control and automatic braking technologies as part of the available Driver Assist Package.
