GMC introduced a redesigned midsize Canyon pickup for the 2015 model year, the manufacturer announced.
Available in extended- and crew-cab bodies, the Canyon will derive base power from a 4-cylinder gasoline engine that produces an estimated 193 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Optional engines are a V-6 gas engine that will produce 302 hp and 270 pound-feet, and a 2.8-liter diesel that will be available in 2016. Power ratings for that engine have not been released.
All models come standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual will be available with the on 2-wheel drive, extended-cab models powered by the 4-cylinder engine.
The Canyon is rated to carry 1,450 pounds in payload, and has a maximum tow rating of 6,700 pounds, GMC said.
Standard on the truck is a 2-tier loading setup that allows installation of a platform to divide the cargo bed into two sections. Also standard is GM’s integrated rear bumper step that debuted on its 2014 full-size pickups.
Options include a torsion bar system to ease with raising and lowering the tailgate and a factory-installed spray-in bed liner.
Three trim levels will be available, in 2- and 4-wheel-drive configurations.
Speaking at the truck’s introduction at the North American International Auto Show, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company sees “opportunity knocking” in the midsize pickup segment.
“Other manufacturers have either ignored it or abandoned it,” she said. “That means midsize pickup customers have had to compromise. To get the features, content and amenities they’re looking for, they’ve had to either leave the segment — most often to a compact crossover or car — or choose from a limited selection. That’s why we’re getting back into the segment.”
GM also is launching a Chevrolet version of the truck under the Colorado nameplate.
