Zip International Recalls Herring Fillet in Oil

US-based Zip International is recalling herring fillet in oil as it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The product associated with the recall is 400g herring fillet in oil (Fosforel, Atlantika) bearing UPC code 4607095500208 with best by dates 15 May 2013 and 17 July 2013. The recalled product is from Russia and was distributed to retail grocery stores across New York State.

This recall has been initiated after the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets detected Listeria monocytogenes in the product during a routine sampling. No illnesses have been reported associated with the recall.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product are advised not to consume it, but to return it to the place of purchase.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause illness in certain groups of people, including pregnant women, unborn and newborn babies, and anyone with reduced immunity, particularly the over-60s.
