New Diesel Engine Architecture Will Be Issued by Volvo

Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Car is planning to launch its new Volvo Engine Architecture (VEA) during autumn 2013, which incorporates i-ART injection technology to reduce fuel consumption in the new diesel engines.

Claimed to be the world's first injection technology, the new i-ART receives pressure feedback from each fuel injector that assists in monitoring and adapting fuel injection per combustion in each of the four cylinders.

Volvo Car Group Powertrain Engineering vice president Derek Crabb said increasing the rail pressure to 2,500 Bar, while adding the i-ART technology, can be described as the second step in the diesel revolution.

"Each injector has a small computer on top, which monitors injection pressure. Using this information, the self-adapting i-ART system makes sure that the ideal amount of fuel is injected during each combustion cycle," Crabb said.

The blend of injection pressure and i-ART technology is aimed at enhancing the engine's fuel economy, while lowering emissions and offering high performance output with a powerful sound character.

"The new powertrains will boost driving pleasure through their agile, yet smooth, responsiveness and the seamless character of the new 8-speed automatic," Crabb said.

Along with the new VEA, the carmaker will also launch a new 8-speed automatic gearbox which would assist in improving the drive, while increasing fuel economy.

The carmaker will also enhance performance of certain engines via electrification or other spearhead technology.

Volvo Car will produce its new engines at its Skvde powertrain plant in Sweden.
