According to the preliminary report released by the South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI), in 2013 apparent steel consumption in ASEAN countries increased by 8-10 percent year on year. Meanwhile, in the given year the region's apparent steel production increased by 6-7 percent, while imports rose by 8-10 percent, both year on year. On the other hand, steel exports from the region last year remained relatively unchanged compared to 2012.
Among the ASEAN countries, the highest growth rates in steel consumption in 2013 were registered in the Philippines with 16 percent, in Singapore with 15 percent, in Vietnam with lower than 10 percent, in Thailand with eight percent and in Indonesia with seven percent, all compared to the previous year.
