Mercedes-Benz Is Trialing Autonomous Capabilities to Arm Its Forthcoming E Class Sedan

Mercedes-Benz is trialing autonomous capabilities to arm its forthcoming E Class sedan, making it respond to road and chart its path through cameras and sensors.

While the feature is yet to leap out of the testing phase, the stage is almost set for paving the way for automatic driving in the sedans set to hit the stores next March.

Daimler's head of development Thomas Weber told Bloomberg: "Innovations in this area are coming thick and fast.

"While we don't want to feed wrong expectations such as sleeping in the car, autonomous driving is set to become a reality much more quickly than the public thinks."

The E-Class, which faces competition from BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Lexus GS, has been a part and parcel with Mercedes.

A test drive last week on freeways has revealed that the sensors and cameras are capable of smoothly restricting the car in the middle of the lane. Though tree shadows and signs came in way of sensors, it managed to adjust the speed in accordance with street signs.

According to reports, the vehicle succeeded in belting down the road at the maximum 130 kilometers per hour.

Besides, the automated systems in the new sedan have been touted to prevent crashes.
