Japan-based automobile manufacturer Honda has recalled 182,800 units in the US, over the malfunction of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system in the vehicles.

The recall will start in April 2013 and affects 101,000 Honda Pilot vehicles, 60,000 units of Acura MDX, 21,000 units of 2005 model Acura RL and about 800 vehicles of 2006 model Acura MDX vehicles.

VSA system in the vehicles could malfunction if an electrical capacitor on it was damaged during manufacturing and will apply a small amount of brake force for fraction of a second without any input from the driver and may also increase the brake force applied when driver applies the brakes during a VSA system malfunction.

The application of untimely brakes or the unexpected brake activation would result in the increased risk of crash that will be addressed by the company by installing new electrical sub-harness.

Additionally, about 51,000 units of the Pilot vehicles, included in the recall, will be inspected for a properly tightened electrical ground bolt for the VSA system.

According to the company, the loosened ground bolt may result in short periods of unexpected brake activation that increase the risk of a crash.

The company said that it has received several complaints the malfunctions in the vehicles, while no crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue.
