Blackberry, Qualcomm to Develop Automotive Platforms for Next Generation Vehicles

Cybersecurity software and services provider BlackBerry has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to develop and manufacture advanced automotive platforms for the next generation connected vehicles.

Under a non-exclusive strategic collaboration, Qualcomm will integrate its hardware platforms with BlackBerry’s QNX software for use in virtual cockpit controllers.

The integrated platform will also be used for telematics, including eCall and Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology, electronic control gateways, digital instrument clusters and infotainment systems.

The companies will also incorporate BlackBerry over-the-air software and BlackBerry Secure Credential Management Services with selected Qualcomm Snapdragon modems to develop high performance automotive platforms.

BlackBerry Technology Solutions president Sandeep Chennakeshu said: “BlackBerry and Qualcomm Technologies have had a long-standing relationship for over a decade, collaborating on technologies that have revolutionized the way people live and work.”

Qualcomm Technologies automotive general manager and senior vice president Patrick Little said: “As innovation in the automotive industry accelerates it becomes necessary for industry leaders to work together to deliver leading-edge technology platforms that help to make vehicles safer, more connected, and increasingly autonomous.”

Earlier this year, Panasonic Automotive collaborated with Qualcomm to develop the next-generation in-vehicle infotainment system based on Android.

The companies have incorporated advanced Android 7.0 features to provide drivers with an entire vehicle lineup, adjusting for different applications, screen sizes, and resolutions.

The adaptive UI design concept will enable OEMs to enhance their system engineering investments and customize the infotainment system across vehicle lineups.
