Automobile major General Motors is likely to import most Buick vehicles sold in the US after 2016 from China and Europe.
Two sources familiar with the development told Reuters that only two of Buick's future models, which are replacements for LaCrosse sedan and Enclave crossover, will probably be built in North America.
A Buick spokesperson said: "We do not comment on future product speculation."
However, Buick aims to shift output of the compact Verano sedan from Michigan to China in late 2016, according to the sources. Production of Regal sedan may be directed from Canada to either China or Europe in 2017.
As for cars to be built at the overseas plants, the carmaker eyes adding two new US models, compact Cascada convertible, set to be imported early next year from Europe, and compact Envision crossover, which will be coming from China in late 2016.
The carmaker's plan comes amid rising tendency of US firms to shift production bases outside the US, an issue featuring in the current contract talks with United Auto Workers.
Subcompact Encore crossover, a Buick model, is now imported from Korea and its production is likely to be ultimately shifted to China, sources added.
China has been stated to be the largest market for the Buick brand, registering sales of 919,582 vehicles last year.
