Hyundai Motors Is Planning to Recall 5,200 Units of Its Azera Sedans in The US

South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai Motors is planning to recall 5,200 units of its Azera sedans in the US, due to a defective airbag sensor.

The recall affects 2012 and 2013 model year Hyundai Azera vehicles.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the occupant detection system is expected to fail in detecting whether the front-seat passenger occupant is an adult, child or a child restraint seat.

As a result, the air bags would be deployed with the incorrect force leading to the increased risk of injury.

The company had determined that a change in the fabric material on the sensor mat could impact the sensor's ability to properly classify an occupant, NHTSA said.

In the review of warranty claims it was found that many cases reported the airbag warning light had illuminated with a diagnostic code for a wet seat, according to NHTSA.

Under the recall, which is expected to commence is third quarter of 2013, the automobile manufacturer plans to recalibrate the airbag system.
