Fujitsu Announced The Start of Field Trials for The Production of Low-Potassium Vegetables

Fujitsu, a leading Japanese information and communication technology (ICT) company, has announced the start of field trials for the production of low-potassium vegetables.

Through this field trials, the company plans to produce cultivate low-potassium leaf lettuce that can meet the nutritional demands of people who require low-potassium vegetables, including those with chronic kidney disease as well as dialysis patients.

The trials will be conducted at plant factory, which will have 2,000m2 space for production. The trials will use the Fujitsu Intelligent Society Solution 'Akisai' Food and Agriculture Cloud Platform for this large-scale plant factory.

This trial is being conducted by a consortium of companies, including companies from within the Fujitsu Group, Aizufujikako, and Fukushima Medical University.

By using the low-potassium vegetable cultivation techniques and knowledge of Aizufujikako and Akita Prefectural University, Fujitsu Home & Office Services will begin trial production of low-potassium leaf lettuce in October 2013, and will shift to full-scale production in January 2014.

The field trials started with a proposal from Fujitsu Home & Office Services to test a large-scale technology-enabled plant factory business based on advanced low-potassium plant cultivation techniques.
