General Motors Is Recalling 1,658 Chevrolet Sonic Cars Over Faulty Strap Welds

General Motors is recalling 1,658 Chevrolet Sonic cars over faulty strap welds that could lead to separation of the fuel tank from the car.

This recall affects the 2013 and 2014 model-year cars - totaling about 1,558 cars in the US and 100 in Canada. According to GM, most of the cars are housed in dealer lots.

The issue was identified at the company's assembly plant in Orion, Michigan.

GM noted that inspection of the bracket straps and any necessary repairs will be free. Till date, the company has not received any reports of accidents, fires or injuries related to the issue.

If the strap bracket separates from the car, the fuel tank would rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank, which could lead to a rattling or scraping noise. Eventually, the fuel tank could separate from the car, GM said.
