Japanese carmaker Mazda Motor has commenced production at its new plant, Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation (MMVO), in Salamanca, Mexico.
The first model produced at this plant was Mazda3 sedan for the US market. MMVO will also produce the Mazda3 sedan for other countries in the Americas and Europe.
Mazda Motor managing executive officer and Mazda Motor Manufacturing de Mexico president and CEO Keishi Egawa said that with the start of mass production, the company now has a system capable of offering vehicles on a global scale.
"We are committed to continue our efforts to contribute to the growth of Mexico's economy through the production of vehicles and the development of the excellent human resources who support and lead the automobile industry here," Egawa added.
Besides this, Mazda also intends to strengthen its production system in Mexico and expand the production model line-up to include the Mazda2 in future.
Forayed into Mexico in 2005, Mazda established MMVO in a joint venture with Sumitomo in September 2011.
In 2013, the carmaker announced its plan to increase production capacity at MMVO to 230,000 units annually by March 2016.
