National Beef Packing, a Kansas-based establishment, is recalling about 690 pounds of beef tongue root filet products, as they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The products subject to recall include 30lb boxes of 'National Beef' Beef Tongue Root Filet, featuring product code '12753,' pack date of '081913A' and establishment number 'EST. 262' inside the USDA mark of inspection.
These products were manufactured on 19 August 2013 and were shipped to a distributor in Amarillo, Texas, for further processing.
The problem was identified during routine FSIS monitoring, which confirmed a positive result for E. coli O157:H7, further investigation revealed that National Beef Packing was the sole supplier of the source materials used to manufacture the product.
Consumption of food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. The symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.
FSIS and National Beef Packing have received no reports of illnesses related to the affected products.
