Michigan Company Has Recalled Turkey Lunch Meat Over Possible Bacterial Contamination

A western Michigan company has recalled turkey lunch meat over possible bacterial contamination.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture said that some of the turkey sold at Earl's Meats in Holland tested positive for Listeria, CBS Detroit reported.

The recalled food product has sell-by dates from 24 February to 3 March 2015.

The consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can result in high fevers, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeria infection can also cause serious illness in young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

However, no adverse reactions have been reported associated with the recall.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development spokeswoman Jennifer Holton said that the lunch meat is believed to be sold only locally and MDARD investigators are still trying to find the source of the problem, Detroit Free Press said.

Meanwhile, Earl's Meats market owner Earl Bosch said that the amount of recalled product is very small.

Bosch said inspectors found Listeria contamination in raw dog food produced at his facility and were concerned about cross-contamination of cooked product in the smokehouse, Food Safety News reported.
