Mitsubishi to Recall About 650,100 Vehicles in Japan Over a Defective Air Intake Duct

Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer Mitsubishi is planning to recall about 650,100 vehicles in Japan over a defective air intake duct.

The recall will affect Minica, Toppo BJ and Toppo BJ wide model vehicles manufactured between 1998 and 2011, along with about 70 vehicles of the same models sold in the overseas market including in Singapore.

The air intake duct attached to the car's engine compartment is held onto the car's body by a plastic clip, which could be damaged, according to Reuters.

Damage to the clip could lead to the duct slipping off and melting, burning or catching fire, according to the company.

The company said to have admitted to be aware of 11 cases regarding the defect and fire is suspected to have been caused by this problem, while 13 cases of burning or melting of the duct have also been reported.

No injuries, deaths or accidents have been reported due to the problem, claims the company.

As part of the recall, the company is expected to exchange the plastic clip with new ones.
