German automaker Daimler has chosen Korean advanced battery maker LG Chem to supply lithium-ion batteries for its Smart EVs which scheduled to be launched in 2016.
LG Chem highlighted that it will providing battery cells to Smart EV and Daimler will install the cells into packs for the vehicles.
The company did not disclose the value of the deal, but according to reports it will supply the EVs for a small portion of the 100,000 Smart mini cars sold by the automaker, reported Reuters.
According to LG Chem, its lithium-ion batteries are expected to provide the best driving performance while running on electric motor.
LG Chem Energy Solution Company president Young Soo Kwon said: "LG Chem's battery business and technology have been world-widely acknowledged once again as our products are continuously being installed by major automobile makers from their commodity brands to premium vehicles."
Kwon added: "LG Chem's will continue to lead the EV battery market with differentiated technology to make us stand up as global No.1 battery manufacturer."
Daimler's Smart brand manufactures and markets micro cars such as Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour.
