Gildan Activewear Inc., the Montreal-based basic apparel manufacturer, is planning to set up a textile plant in North Carolina’s Rowan County.
The company plans to revamp a shuttered 400,000-square-foot facility, owned by Salisbury’s aluminium and vinyl material specialist PGT Windows, for producing fabrics for shirts and other basic garment products.

The proposed textile facility, which after completion will be operated by Gildan’s Bladen County located yarn-spinning subsidiary CanAm Yarns LLC, would be built with an investment of US$ 50 million and is expected to create nearly 200 new jobs.
Along with a distribution centre in Rockingham County, the new factory will be the Canadian manufacturer’s third facility in the US state of North Carolina.
Founded in 1984, Gildan is a publicly-traded company and employs approximately 30,000 people worldwide. Headquartered in Montreal, the company is expanding in Mexico, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, in addition to the US.
Gildan produces a variety of activewear for men, women and children including t-shirts, fleece, underwear and socks.
