Johnson Controls to Introduce 48V Micro Hybrid Battery System for Automobiles in Detroit

Johnson Controls is planning to unveil the 48V Micro Hybrid battery system for automobiles on 14 January 2013 at the North American International Auto Show(NAIAS)in Detroit,US.

The company plans to implement a dual voltage design with a low voltage lead-acid battery and a 48V Lithium-ion battery, which is expected to save fuel by optimizing energy generation and consumption.

Johnson Controls Power Solutions president Alex Molinaroli said that the company sees opportunities for the development of energy storage systems that offer more fuel efficiency than Start-Stop at less cost than a hybrid or electric vehicle.

"Even as Start-Stop vehicles become part of the mainstream in Europe and start to take hold in the US,Micro Hybrid technology has the potential to deliver the next level of fuel efficiency along the spectrum of vehicle performance, reaching upwards of 15 to 20 percent in fuel economy,"Molinaroli said.

Europe is expected to be the first to implement the technology by the company, followed by the US in the upcoming few years and used in major markets by 2020.

The battery is developed to support higher power loads including electric air-conditioning,chassis technologies and the storage of regenerative power energy braking, while the 12V battery would power the vehicle starter, interior and exterior lights, and entertainment systems.
