UK-based recycling services provider Viridor will ivest 25m pounds in the development of a new glass recycling facility at Newhouse in Lanarkshire.
The new facility, which will be located adjacent to the M8 motorway, will operate with a recycling capacity of 200,000t of glass annually.
By recycling packaging glass collected in Scotland, the facility will reduce dependancy on imported materials for making whisky and beverage bottles, according to the company.
Once completed, the Newhouse facility will recover up to 97% of input materials by recycling glass from 17 Scottish local authorities while achieving up to 99% product purity.
The 70,000t2 facility, to be built on a seven hectare area, will create 30 full-time jobs and also enhance government warm homes objectives through a partnership with insulation provider, Superglass in Stirling.
According to Viridor, the facility will encompass some 15 'scientific eye' optical sorters, x-ray sorters, over half kilometer of conveyer belts and 2.5km of electrical cabling across three floors of processing towers.
Equipment installation will begin this month for the new Newhouse facility that will start production in summer 2013 with full operation by 2014.
Viridor chief executive Ian McAulay said, "Part of a 500m pounds Scottish investment strategy to translate zero waste policy into practice, the centre will drive sustainability for the Scotch whisky and associated sectors at the heart of Scotland's global position.'
