Motiv Power Systems Has Opened a New Manufacturing Plant in Hayward

Control systems maker Motiv Power Systems has opened a new manufacturing plant in Hayward, California, and recireceived $8.1m in grant from California Energy Commission (CEC) to commercialize its all-electric powertrain.

With an annual installed capacity of 480 units, the manufacturing unit will employ 20 people.

The Motiv all-electric powertrain has been recognized as one of Popular Science's 2014 Best of What's New technologies.

CEC lead commissioner on transportation Janea A. Scott said: "Motiv Power Systems is advancing electric transportation technology through several California Energy Commission grants, transforming mere concepts into practical, zero and near-zero emission vehicles.

"This new manufacturing facility is a great example of effective public policy and investments that can help the state meet its clean air, climate and petroleum reduction goals."

Motiv has, so far, obtained $12.3m from the CEC since the firm's inception in 2009.

Last time, Motiv obtained $2.4m funds for upgrading the Hayward manufacturing unit.

CEC also provided grants to the tune of $2.7m and $3m for producing a Class C electric school bus and electric refuse, and loader truck.

The Motiv all-electric powertrain upfit package is currently applicable for three truck and bus chassis: the Ford F59, the Ford E450 and Crane Carrier cabover class 8 chassis.

They contain the components needed to transform the chassis from fossil fuel to zero-emission all-electric drive, such as batteries, motor, universal charging compatibility and power for hydraulics, heating and air conditioning units.
