A legislation barring apparel and textile vendors from supplying goods made under sweatshop conditions to Missouri’s St. Louis County has been introduced by its Councilman Mr. Pat Dolan.
The proposed bill aims to prevent the companies in the County from buying uniforms for their workers that are made in sweatshop like situations.
Speaking to media persons, Mr. Dolan said contracts will be nullified with those vendors who supply or distribute goods from unethical manufacturers who are engaged in sweatshop practices.
Under the new legislation, sweatshop practices include failing to pay wages in compliance with federal or state regulations, exposing workers to toxic chemicals or making employees work excessively long hours and forced or child labour.
Items that are included under the proposed bill include uniforms, sheets, pillowcases and blankets.
However, the council would be required to twice vote on the measure before it can be sent for approval of St. Louis County Executive, after which it can be implemented.
Mr. Dolan clarified that the bill, once passed, would not apply to existing contracts.
