Continental Has Invested ?36m to Expanded Its Chassis & Safety Plant in Changshu

German automotive supplier Continental has expanded its Chassis & Safety plant in Changshu, China with an investment of €36m, as part of its plan to accelerate its growth in the country.

The expansion includes the addition of 7,600m2 floor space, which will increase the plant's capacity, while allowing it to locally produce Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).

The company has added a new production line for the EPB in order to increase the plant's production volume and provide sufficient logistic space. EPBs perform various assistance functions in conjunction with electronic brake systems to increase safety and convenience.

Continental China president and CEO Ralf Cramer said that he is very delighted about the investment, which not only responds to the robust local business growth development, but also demonstrates our commitment to exploring the booming Chinese market for sustainable growth in the future.

"We are excited about continually expanding our investment in the Chinese market and confident in achieving over-proportional growth here," Cramer added.

The Changshu plant will supply locally produced EPB to Chinese and Japanese vehicle manufacturers from 2014. The expansion will boost the annual production volume by around 30% and increase the workforce to 2,250.

Continental currently operates 19 manufacturing locations and nine R&D centers in China since its start. The company develops and manufactures products for all different vehicle segments, from the high-end vehicles to affordable cars.
