New Zealand government is set to introduce a proposal to make electronic stability control

New Zealand government is set to introduce a proposal to make electronic stability control (ESC) mandatory in new and used light vehicles entering the New Zealand fleet

Currently under public consultation, ESC is a vehicle safety technology designed to reduce the risk of a crash resulting from a driver losing control of the vehicle.

Earlier, the Ministry of Transport and the NZ Transport Agency have conducted a research and concluded that making ESC mandatory in all vehicles will save 22 lives, prevent 102 serious and 400 minor injuries in the coming 20 years.

Currently, the Transport Agency along with the Ministry of Transport is now looking for feedback on specific proposed changes to legislation to make ESC mandatory for new light vehicles including passenger and commercial from 2015.

The public consultation on Land Transport Rule: Light-vehicle Brakes Amendment 2014 is being led by the Transport Agency.

The legislation will be moved on to the imported used light vehicles from 2016 to 2020.
