Tesco Has Announced Its Support for a Hybrid Labeling System

UK-based retailer Tesco has announced its support for a hybrid labeling system that combines its existing Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) with the ‘traffic light’ color coding system, following new customer research.

The research has revealed that the traffic light system does not give shoppers all the information they need but allowed them to receive 'at-a-glance guidance.' Shoppers also prefer GDA's which give accurate and meaningful information and want a consistent approach to labeling across the industry.

Tesco said it proposes to work with government, non-governmental organizations (NGO), public health organizations, other retailers and its supply chain to give more information on pack to the shoppers.

Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke said it was the first retailer to put nutritional information on the front of its packs in 2005 when it rolled out its GDA labels.

"We always listen to our customers and they have told us that by combining our popular GDA labels with traffic light colour coding we can make it even easier for them to make informed and healthy choices about the food they buy," Clarke added.
